It’s World AIDS Day in just over a month’s time. I think the UN’s hashtag for this year’s theme should’ve been #HIVPreventionEveryDay, but I am grateful that, at the least, we all have the opportunity to emphasise the need for #HIVprevention on this one particular day, every year.

Why?

According to the UN’s “AIDS By The Numbers” report for 2016, 1.1 million people worldwide died of AIDS-related illnesses in 2015. It was also estimated that, by the end of 2015, there would be 36.7 million people in the world living with HIV. [1]

The stats for South Africa are dismal. Year on year, since 2010, the number of people contracting HIV has been going UP, with an estimated 19.2% of the population being infected as at 2015. [2]

Most of you who read my safety tips regularly will know that I believe in tackling issues over which we have control. HIV/AIDS is one of those issues. We can all contribute to the UN members’ goals of ending AIDS by 2030.

Number 3 on the list of the UN’s “Fast Track Commitments to end AIDS by 2030” [3] is:

“Ensure access to combination prevention options, including pre-exposure prophylaxis, voluntary medical male circumcision, harm reduction and condoms, to at least 90% of people …”

Number 5 is:

“Ensure that 90% of young people have the skills, knowledge and capacity to protect themselves from HIV …”

UNAIDS, the UN agency responsible for the global HIV/AIDS response, has published their World AIDS Day campaign brochure for the 2016 theme: “Hands up for #HIVprevention“. It’s an exciting, interactive initiative and the brochure expands on what you can do to raise awareness using their “Hands Up” theme. [4]

I am raising my hand for PREVENTION and AWARENESS and you can too.

The SHE Rep plays a pivotal role in any OHS Management System:

  • On the one hand, the SHE Rep represents the employee – for the employees, by the employees.
  • On the other hand, the SHE Rep is a member of the committee tasked with making representations to the Employer on OHS issues.
Approach, Objectives and Outcomes

By involving the SHE Reps in the management of incidents (prevention, preparation, response and recovery), the employer will reap double the benefits. Number of Attendees & Sessions

Minimum 30 attendees per session, but up to 60 can be accommodated.

Duration & Timing

Up to 5 hours training, excluding lunch and tea breaks.

The quote is based on training sessions done Monday to Friday, during day-shift hours.

If training sessions are required over the weekend or after hours, a 50% surcharge per delegate will be imposed.

Venue & Preparation

The Client is responsible for arranging a suitable venue that meets our requirements for workshop facilitation and interaction with the delegates.

The Client will deal with the logistics and provision of refreshments.

The contact details of the delegates need to be provided by the Client before each session, so that we can send the delegates the pre-work required in preparation for the workshop, as well as invite them to share with us any questions and/or issues they may have.

Equipment / Presentation Aids Requirements

Please confirm that you have a screen projector and flip chart / white board available in the training facility.

Certificates & Feedback

An Attendance Certificate will be given to each workshop attendee and a summary of the feedback and evaluation comments will be given to the client.

Customization for In-House Boot Camps: MIRROR TECHNIQUE

This critical technique involves taking photos of your specific site and giving feedback to the audience about the GOOD, the bad and the ugly. I focus on personal workspaces, where you sit, eat, work and keep your tools, as I believe that safety starts ‘at home’. In the feedback I use the Safety Game analogy, with the ‘players’ and ‘coach’, as well as the “ISIBOPHO” whistle and red / green card. The delegates have to ‘look to see’ and accept responsibility for the need to change. This technique involves photos of your operation, which the delegates can recognize and identify with. Below are a few examples of photos which I share with the people ‘who push the buttons and use the tools’.

The customisation is included in the Boot Camp fee. We estimate that it will take half a day to walk about, take suitable photographs and prepare the mirror sessions for the delegates. The client has to provide a safety person to act as a guide for these walkabouts.

SCnSP So Many Meetings, So Little Time

In this series, I share with you my thoughts on Why Safety is an Issue for Most Companies, or, putting it differently, Things we Must Address if we Want to Improve our Safety Performance. Under the microscope today is our effective (or not!) use of time, in particular when it comes to meetings.

     

So Many Meetings, So Little Time

All of us have to deal with meetings in one form or another and, to a larger or lesser extent, for all of our lives. Especially in safety, meetings seem to be a primary mode of operation for many companies. If they have a safety issue / problem / incident, they organise a meeting.

Meetings can be a blessing or a curse. A blessing, if they are well run, productive and achieve the results we are looking for and cannot otherwise achieve. A curse if they are not necessary, turn out to be a waste of time, involve mostly hot air (talking), create confusion and do not lead to people taking responsibility, especially for ACTION.

Most people suffer from the meeting paradox: “We don’t have time to prepare for effective meetings, because we spend too much time in ineffective meetings.”

Time is the most precious resource we have and, the more senior your position, the more precious it becomes. We all have this finite resource of 24 hours, relentlessly ticking by. That is why it is such a tragedy that people waste it in unproductive meetings. If you do not believe me, have a look at this short video for some horrifying facts and figures around meetings.

I believe that every company would greatly benefit from employing a

meeting “PIMP” = “Performance Improvement and Measuring Professional”.

In terms of the law (OHAS ACT 85 OF 1993 S17 – S19 and MHAS ACT 29 OF 1996 S25 and S35) we have no option. We MUST have safety committees and therefore meet. However, how we do this and how well we use this time is up to us.

The biggest problem is that we do not prepare for these meetings and that the members of the safety committees (this applies equally well to other committees and meetings) do not play their proper role in these meetings.
As a general rule, 50% of the time should be spent preparing for the meeting (including thinking time), 20% attending and partaking in the meeting and the remaining 30% to take action and follow up on and close out agreed actions.
Furthermore, we do not make it crystal clear who owns the action, what the result should look like and by when the action should be completed. Often, it is not even clear who owns each item on the agenda.

ACTION

Resolve TODAY to take the necessary action to transform your meetings from a curse to a blessing.
