We’re almost halfway through the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, which was officially launched 11 May 2011 via a resolution supported by 100 countries. This resolution was subsequently adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 April this year.

The official aim of the Decade of Action is to stabilise and then reduce global road traffic fatalities by 2020. Making it real, the aim is to save 5 million lives.

Globally, road traffic incidents rank 8th as a cause of death.

But, they are the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 29.

Horrific stats.  That’s our younger generation.

Delving deeper, globally, pedestrian deaths amount to 22% of all road deaths every year – that’s over 270,000 people. Pedestrian fatalities in the African Region are sitting at 38%.

In South Africa, between 35-37% of all road fatalities are pedestrian fatalities.

If no effective action has been taken since 2011, then the forecast figures indicate that this year the figure of 270,000 will have increased to 330,000 by now.

South Africa launched the Arrive Alive Road Safety Campaign in 1997.
The RTMC is running a 365 Days Road Safety Campaign and published their revised Strategic Plan for the next 5 years in March.

Are these initiatives working?

At the 82nd UN Assembly (2013), Jeremiah Mamabolo said that the Arrive Alive Road Safety Campaign “had resulted in a drastic reduction in the number of deaths from accidents and sharpened the response of law enforcement agencies and health services.”

You can read all about the RTMC’s progress related to the “5 Pillars for the Decade of Action for Road Safety” in their latest annual report, and decide for yourself.

Like it or not, the fact remains that it is up to each and every individual to take responsibility for road safety.
Why not start with pedestrian safety?

♦ As individuals, we can ensure that we have not “gardened” up the paving areas outside our homes to the point where pedestrians are forced to walk in the street.

♦ As responsible citizens, we can ensure our communal areas and company premises are safe for pedestrians.

ACTION

  • Do a survey of pedestrian safety inside your company premises, including inside buildings. Are there enough walkways, clearly demarcated / barricaded off, for people to walk safely?
  • Look for places where people are NOT using the walk ways and establish why short cuts are being taken. Ask people, don’t make assumptions. Is it a matter of education / policing / discipline?
  • Go to your surrounding communities and look for opportunities to help with pedestrian safety, especially around schools. Can your company sponsor Zebra crossings, side walks, or anything else which can show your community that you do care.
  • Draw up a home safety flyer / cartoon brochure for your employees to take home and to distribute at schools to highlight the risks and safe behaviour. Or get posters that Arrive Alive and the RTMC have designed.
  • Share “The Long Short Walk” video with others and “tag” your people.

Year-End Take Safety Home Message

Those of you who have been following me for some time know how passionate I am about this topic. We kill nearly ten times more people on our roads each year than ALL industrial fatalities combined in all workplaces. Chances are that if you are going to lose someone over the holiday season, it will be on the roads. This is not only via vehicle accidents – pedestrian fatalities account for approximately 40% of road-related deaths.

We are able to release last year’s crime statistics in the greatest of detail so the SAPS can plan and focus on the right hot spots. But, in spite of substantial funding, the Department of Transports Road Traffic Management Corporation is unable to provide road accident statistics, because they are “reengineering the Road Traffic information collection process”. In terms of road safety, we are effectively flying blind. I cannot give you the exact figure, but I can tell you that the cost of road accidents runs into billions – we could easily build and maintain our road infrastructure if we could halve our accidents.

We all know that we cannot improve something which we are not measuring and the latest road traffic data is from 2011! We can be as concerned as we like about the current situation, but we can only influence what is within our control. Therefore, let us influence our employees to become ACTIVE SAFE road users.

There are three things which kill people on the roads ( F S D )

The first is FATIGUE. If people are tired and take their eyes off the road, the likelihood of accidents shoots up dramatically. Thus encourage the habit of taking a break and getting enough sleep before a road trip.

SPEED is the second killer. Speed reduces the opportunity to react to any unforeseen event and stay in control!

DRINKING (Drugs) is the third killer. Alcohol has a disastrous effect on your reaction time as well as staying awake and alert.

ACTION

1. Draw up your plan for the year-end now! Involve your SHE Reps in that planning – empower them to play an ACTIVE role in implementing some of the ideas below, as well as coming up with their own suggestions.
2. Road Safety Cookie

In this series, I share with you my thoughts on Why Safety Is An Issue For Most Companies. One of the Things We Must Address If We Want To Improve Our Safety Performance is to look in the mirror and honestly assess the importance of safety.

I Don’t Have Time

The Number 1 Excuse For Not Getting Things Done

This is one of the most frequent excuses used by all of us, because we always have more things to do than time to do them in.

So, what determines whether or not something on the To-Do List will get time?
What gives one item the edge, the higher priority, over another item?
Compliance deadlines and fear of penalties or suspension of business?
Sure.
Hooray for  The  Fear  Factor.

But we all know that The Fear Factor will only get you so far. Though we may not want to admit it, there is no doubt in my mind that, busy or not, if something is important to you, you will “find the time” to do it. And that brings us to the subject of the other motivators –   Need  and  Desire.

The challenge for most Safety Professionals is how to move people from behaviour which is driven by fear to behaviour which is driven by need (fundamental) and/or desire (passion). Coupled with that is their (often) difficult task of getting management to invest valuable production time and other resources to achieve that objective.

When it comes to safety, fear will always be a motivator, to an extent. Who wants to die or be severely injured, or even handicapped for life?
Wouldn’t it be great, though, if the time we allocate to safe behaviour and practices and coaching was driven by a deep-seated passion to keep our employees and our peers and fellow-workers (and ourselves) safe from harm? To keep our environment and resources safe from harm?

Do you have the time for safety? How important is it to you? How passionate are you about creating and/or maintaining a safe workplace, home, community? Is safety in your company driven by fear, or is it driven by passion for people and the environment … or more by one than the other? And is it enough to make your co-workers invest personally in safety if you aren’t willing to invest the time?

ACTION

  • Think before you use the “I don’t have time” excuse. All it says to people is that, although you say “Safety Is No. 1”, it really isn’t, thus wreaking havoc with your credibility.
  • Review your personal motivators for Safety. Plan your time to deal with the important things every day rather than get swamped by all the urgent stuff.
  • Review your co-workers’ and decision-makers’ motivators and find ways to move yourself and the people you work with from compliance-driven to passion-driven. Make sure that the adrenalin-junkies and risk-takers know to keep those drives out of the workplace.

A Process of Engaging All Your Employees

Now is the right time to ride on the wave of election fever. Political parties of all shapes and sizes were abuzz trying to woo voters. The streets are still plastered with papers, posters and promises; flags, banners and T-shirts could be seen everywhere; campaigns, rallies and toyi-toyi were the order of the day; manifestos, interviews and empty rhetoric in the media. More than enough.

However, there is a positive spin-off for us safety practitioners. We can use this political model and the energy created and channel that into safety.

Why do we vote?

Each one of us believes it is our right and civil duty to contribute to who and how the country is run. Most of us trust our vote will make a difference. This is the springboard for safety. Employees must be empowered (and know they are empowered) to make a difference in safety. The best way to empower people is to give them Einspruchsrecht – the right to partake in decisions which affect them, especially in safety.

The COOL TOOL™ Vote For Safety™ is a most effective process to achieve just this.

We don’t have to train people how to vote. The IEC has done that for us already. We can engage everyone, from the shopfloor to the boardroom. People know that each vote carries the same weight, whether it is the CEO’s or the janitor’s.

  • Brief the management about the concept of Vote For Safety™ and ensure their buy-in. This includes the need for them to take this effort seriously, for absolute transparency and their unconditional acceptance of the results of the voting.
  • Set an election date and ensure that people are given time to go and vote on that day.
  • Brief all employees about Vote For Safety™ – what is the purpose and management’s commitment to the process – WHY, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHO and HOW.
  • Appoint a champion / owner who must assemble a team of election officials, observers, etc. and thus drive the process. This is best done by empowering the SHE Reps to elect the “Chief Safety Election Officer” and “Safety Election Officials”. The safety officers should take up the “Safety Election Observer / Advisor” role.
  • The ballot paper is critical to the voting process. Agree on the outcome of the voting process and how to structure the ballot paper.

GM – It’s the final countdown!

It’s official. The Silly Season is on our doorstep and wherever you look there are tips for surviving it – how to survive office parties, recover from hangovers, stay slim … and now, from me, how to keep the safety spirit alive and, literally, survive at work, at home, at play and on the road.

 

It’s the Final Countdown!

It is the same, tiresome “old song”, a hardy perennial – complaining about the so-called “Silly Season”, but yet, so often, doing nothing about it because we feel so helpless.

Every year, at around this time, I get asked for a quick-fix solution to combat the effects of people letting down their guard – before, during and after the holidays.

The answer lies in understanding what is different about the “Silly Season” to any other time of the year:

  • We have our minds set on taking time out and getting a break. We are preoccupied with planning a vacation, taking a trip, spending time with our families and in general doing something different from the everyday slog of working.
  • We are being bombarded with advertising and Christmas lights and Christmas music on the radio and TV as early as October.
  • ” ‘Tis the season to be jolly” i.e. celebrating with “wine, women and song” and afterwards hitting the road, either driving or on foot. Nearly half of the road deaths are pedestrians.
  • We are down-shifting gears, losing FOCUS on safety and much more inclined to “tata ma chance”, and, for those people who have to work while everyone else is on holiday, it is especially tough to stay focused.
  • We work with less staff on shift and it’s mostly the junior, less experienced people who stay behind. The old hands pull rank and go on leave, placing steering of the ship through the troubled Christmas break in the hands of the second team.
Knock! Knock! Who's there? Itsilly. Itsilly who? It's SILLY SEASON time!

The critical question is: Are you SERIOUS about taking ACTION to deal with this safety issue and are you willing to invest TIME & MONEY to show your employees that you are indeed serious?

ACTION

  1. Get the senior managers (EXCO level and those reporting to the EXCO) to “Walk the Talk” on the site. The key here is constant visibility!
  2. Issue “Silly Season Safety Official” vests to the senior managers and SHE Reps and make them hand out safety reminders at the office / factory / mine gate!
